Chicken fry help needed in Ft. Loramie

Please spread the word, we still do not have someone to take over for Deb and Buck Albers to manage the monthly chicken fries.  We need someone to be trained in the month of May.  This is a paid position.  While we had hoped that someone within the Legion/Auxiliary/Sons would take the position, we are now forced to open it to any qualified person. Deb will help train those who take this position, but she and Buck have Saturday commitments beginning in June and we need someone now. While some may think the Canteen can support an active Legion, a review of the Post finances will show it cannot.  If it were not for the monthly chicken fries, the Legion would not be functioning as it is. The chicken fries must continue and a manager(s) must be found.  Help us however you can.  Thanks!

For Maeve

As some of you may know, one of my preschoolers, Maeve Meyer (daughter of John and Melissa) has been diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a disease of the bone marrow in which it does not produce enough white and red cells and platelets.   On April 3rd Maeve had a bone marrow transplant.  Her brave big brother, Gabe was a match!  What a hero!  Maeve will be in the hospital in Columbus for the next 4-6 weeks.  There will be many trips back and forth, many bills, and many other expenses.    Osgood State Bank in Fort Loramie will be collecting donations.  There is no amount too small.  Donations can be in the form of gas cards, gift cards or money.  All you have to do is stop by the bank and tell them you have a donation for Maeve Meyer.  Please do what you can and keep them all in your prayers.      You can follow Maeve’s progress or send words of encouragement to maevemeyer.comThank you so much for your support and generosity.  Thanks Again,Heather Larger

Flood memories

On March 23, 1973, the 60th anniversary of the flood, the Sidney Daily News had a two-part article, written by Clarence Raterman. The second part contained memories of the flood by some of those who lived through it.

Marie Quinlin remembered sitting by the window reading. "There was something uncanny about the way the rain kept coming down. There was water all around the house."

Raterman recalled a boat tied to the porch steps in front of their house and seeing much activity on the high porch of the Quinlin home, some involving attempts to save the Loramie Reservoir from breaking out of its banks.

Frank Fleckenstein said, "Julie Pauwell was caretaker of the lake and he asked me to help reinforce the south side of the lake. We got burlap bags and filled them with dirt. We laid a wall about 100 feet long and 18 inches high. Sometime on Tuesday morning some of the dirt-filled bags washed out and sent water south and northwest. About 50 men sandbagged the area around the Cluck's Nest feeder and the main bulkhead near Pauwell's. The main reservoir didn't go out just the south end. If the main part had gone out the devastation west and south would have been terrible".

According to Fleckenstein the aqueduct over Loramie Creek was severely damaged and the big timbers banged against the Loramie River Bridge breaking it in half. Ferd Arkenburg remembers the big oak beams 30 feet by 12 inches square. "We later fished them out of the creek and hauled them up to use at our gravel pit." He remembered that the Sunday following the flood he and a group of young men took Barney Danzig's furniture wagon and traveled to Piqua over Route 66 dodging washouts all the way. "When we got there, there were houses piled up all along the river and they were still taking out bodies. When the people saw Fort Loramie painted on the furniture wagon they came over and gave us hell for letting the dam up at Loramie go out."

Ferd Arkenburg said, "We had a 16 foot motor boat. We furnished milk to Herman Gaier's store in Fort Loramie. When the flood came we used the boat to deliver the milk right over the fences, posts and everything for several days. It must have been about 25 feet deep in the river channel. We used the boat to go over to Henry Sommer's north of us. Henry was waving to us. A big sow was floating down the water on a rail fence. We went over and chased the sow off the raft. She swam over to the Sommer place. Another day we went to Gregor Fleckenstein's. He couldn't get out of his land to get to Loramie. His tile mill was under water. All of the drying boards had floated down the creek and we had to get his chickens out of the coop before they all drowned".

Arthur Short lived near the corner of Routes 47 and 66 in Newport. He recalled seeing Leighty Lake going out scattering big timbers 60 feet long and 14x6 inches wide.
